Avie ‘Jewel’ James, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at the age of 88.
A native of Yazoo City, MS, Jewel lived a life rooted in love for her family and community. She was one of 13 children, and relocated to the Jackson, MS area where she remained.
Jewel was a graduate of Mississippi College, where she found a passion for learning and business. She went on to become an esteemed and accomplished business woman. Jewel first worked and retired from Ashland Chemical. She then co-founded DeForest Wood Preserving Company in Bolton, MS with her husband and son. Jewel played a vital role in the growth and success of the family business. She was one of the first women to work and excel in the lumber industry, opening doors for other women to follow. Her efforts built a legacy of hard work and dedication that continues to thrive today.
Jewel was a devout Christian and member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a cherished part of the congregation and an example of faith and community spirit. Her kindness and generosity extended far and wide, as she always offered a helping hand or kind word to those in need.
Jewel had many hobbies that brought her joy. She loved gardening, where she found peace in nature while tending to her flowers, plants and gardens. Her favorite pastime of shopping often turned into a family affair, as she was always eager to share in the excitement of finding a bargain whether at Goodwill or Belk. An avid painter, she completed many original pieces of artwork. Jewel also loved to read, and could often be found with a mystery novel in her hand.
Yet, despite her many accomplishments, it was her family that was truly the center of her heart. Jewel married the love of her life, Frank DeForest James, on Dec. 23, 1954. Together they went on to grow a family of 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
Jewel was the definition of a true matriarch; an anchor for her family. Throughout her life, she demonstrated that family is not just an important part of life—it is the most important part. She showed her family unwavering commitment, and was the one they turned to for advice, comfort, and strength. Her presence and wisdom served as a constant source of love and stability; she was a guiding light that will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Her legacy of love, compassion, and devotion will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Jewel’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, but her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
Jewel was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Frank DeForest James Jr, son-in-law Landal Wallace, parents, 3 brothers, and 8 sisters.
Jewel is survived by her children Frank D. James III of Jackson, Rhonda McGraw (Sammy) of Byram, Don James (Roxanne) of Morton, Dixie Odom of Richland, and Leslie James of Byram and honorary son Maurice Smith. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Jeremiah Johnson, Tom Odom, Leah Rigney (Jacob), Josh Phillips (Kristian), Adam Wallace, Justin Wallace (Emily), and Lindsey Wallace Clark (Blake). Jewel was also the proud great-grandmother of Rachael Johnson, Ian Johnson, Asher Rigney, Levi Rigney, Hayes Phillips, Camille Phillips, Reese Phillips, Collins Clark, Rainer Clark. She is also survived by her sister, Lora Brock and numerous nieces and nephews.
