Mr. Calvin Lee Brummett

Calvin Lee Brummett, 82, loving, Christian husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 9, 2013, at his home in Florence, MS, with his wife near his side. Visitation will be held from 5-8 P.M. on Monday, March 11th and from 10 A.M. until the 11 A.M. Celebration of Life service on Tuesday, March 12th at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence, MS. Mr. Brummett was born on June 25, 1930, near Belzoni, MS, to Perry Thatcher and Annie Lillian Ray Brummett. He was reared by his paternal grandparents, William Mason and Mattie Lucy Brummett after his mother’s death shortly after his birth. During WWII his family lived in Hattiesburg, and he sold newspapers to soldiers training at Camp Shelby. Apparently those dedicated men inspired him to follow in their footsteps because he later joined the National Guard, his service being only during times of peace. Mr. Brummett attended school in Hattiesburg, MS, until the seventh grade, at which time he quit school to go to work. In his early twenties, he completed training to become a plumber and pipefitter and later became a pneumatic control technician. In 1948 he met Mamie Lee Grantham of Itta Bena, MS, and after a very brief courtship, they eloped. They were married for 64 years, and together they reared four daughters. Anyone who met Mr. Brummett would quickly learn that his priorities in life were his Lord and his family. An ordained deacon for over forty years, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence, MS at the time of his death. A long-time member of Plumber and Pipefitters Locals 681 and 714, he worked in areas related to this field for over 65 years. Mr. Brummett thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. A humorous man, he considered no one immune to his kind-hearted teasing, as any one who met him, including his doctors and nurses, quickly learned. He loved the outdoors, especially water sports, including water skiing and fishing. His grandchildren called him “the magic fisherman” because he always seemed to catch fish or to be sure they caught fish on every outing. A man of many talents, Mr. Brummett enjoyed helping family, friends, and neighbors with repairs of almost any kind. He could take almost any material and create it into something useful or beautiful. He recently told one of his daughters that he felt he knew a little about almost everything but not enough about anything. This belief was apparent in his never-ending desire to learn. He strived every day to teach his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that loving Jesus Christ and family, earning a good education, working hard, and taking time to enjoy life were the keys to success and happiness. In addition to his wife, Mr. Brummett is survived by his daughters Jackie Linn (Dion) of Ortig, WA, Cindy Baugh (John, Sr.) of Meridian, MS, Mamie Lilley (Frank) of Jackson, MS, and Dolly Field (Del) of Petal, MS. and twelve grandchildren: Stacy McIntyre, Eric McIntyre, John Baugh, Jr. (Melissa), Robert Calvin Baugh (Deb), Frank “Smith” Lilley, Jr. (Jessica), Jack Brummett Lilley, Johnelyn Lilley Coughlin (Nick), Melanie Brady (David), Lidel Field (Christy), and Fran Field. In addition, he is survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, two brothers, Perry Thatcher Brummett , Jr. (Jeanie) of Powder Springs, GA and Sam Brummett (Bonnie) of Chickaloon, AK, his long-time friend and coworker, Bobby Howard (Joann), and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mr. Brummett was preceded in death by his sister Mary Frances Brummett Agnew. The family would like to thank Jackson Oncology Associates, Jackson Radiology Associates, Mississippi Home Health Services, Hospice Ministries, especially, Dr. Todd Adkins, Dr. Tammy Young, Dr. Richard Friedman, and Dr. Maria Rappai, for the loving care they gave to Mr. Brummett.
