Carl H. West, 59, died Tuesday at the VA Nursing Home in Jackson after a long illness. A senior staff member at Friends of Alcoholics in Flora, Mr. West was a machinist by training and a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ by choice.\ \ Mr. West was a native of Texas and an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army.\ \ His compassion for men with substance abuse problems grew significantly stronger even as his body began to deteriorate from the ravages of widespread cancer. The grace of God granted to him as his life ebbed away impacted nearly everyone with whom he came in contact.\ \ Mr. West was preceded in death by his father, Vista E. West, his mother, Mildred Wienken West, and a sister Linda Gail (West) Frye. He is survived by a brother, Jeffrey Lynn West, two nieces and five nephews.\ \ Services are scheduled at Berean Bible Church on the grounds of FOA for Friday, July 8, 2011 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Alcoholics in Flora, MS.\ \
