One of Carrie Frances Shows Jones’ greatest legacies will be the best chocolate chip cookie ever. Carrie went to be with her heavenly Father at her home on August 9, 2013, at age 91. In West, MS, on August 27, 1921, Carrie was born to the late Everett Lafayette and Carline Shows. Though the only daughter, Carrie’s six brothers made life interesting with their teasing and practical jokes. She is survived by Russell Shows of Florence, her eldest brother. As toddlers, Russell was told to clean mud off Carrie, which he did, by washing her hair with flour and eggs. Carrie married Burkett Ozell Jones, a Navy sailor on April 20, 1941. They were married 56 years before his death in 1997. As a military wife and mother to six children, Carrie created the home where every child wanted to play and eat her endless supply of homemade chocolate chip cookies. Upon Ozell’s retirement from the Navy, the family made their permanent residence in Florence. Carrie has been a member of Florence’s First Baptist Church since July 1944, and served many of those years as the Sunday School Secretary. Each week she looked forward to attending her Sunday School class, which held a special place in her heart. Much laughter was heard from these ladies at her much anticipated birthday party each year. Carrie worked for years at the old Bradshaw grocery in Florence and for 13 years at Zayre’s Department Store. She loved tending the flowers in her yard and twice won Florence’s Yard of the Month when she resided on West Main Street. Carrie wished to express her appreciation for the love and care given to her by her children, Bob Jones of Florence; Martha Ludke (Ralph) of Pelahatchie, Don Jones (Wanda) of Richland, John Jones (Sheila) of Florence; and Betty Jo Harrell (Lynn) of Florence. She was also blessed with 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren. A graveside service was held August 10, 2013, at Florence Cemetery with Chancellor Funeral Home handling the arrangements and online guest book. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries and Florence’s First Baptist Church.
