Mrs. Catherine Gibson

March 22, 1927 — November 26, 2016

Catherine W. Gibson, 89, went to be with Jesus and our dad on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Highland Home in Ridgeland, with her daughters by her side. She died of complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis. Visitation will be 5-8pm Friday, December 2, 2016 and 10am until the 11am funeral service Saturday, December 3, 2016, all at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. Catherine was born on March 22, 1927, to Joseph A. Williams and Mary Gregg in Howison, MS. She married the love of her life, Quinton "Gib" Gibson, Sr. on September 5, 1948. Catherine had lived in Jackson, MS, since 1950. She was a faithful, active member at Daniel Memorial Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. She taught Sunday School to five year olds, youth, and young adults for many years. She went on all youth choir trips, when her children were in the youth choir, serving as a chaperone, affectionately callled "Maw" by all. Mom, known as "Grammy" to her grands and great grands, was a wonderful housewife and homemaker. She was a fabulous cook and seamstress, making nearly all of our clothes during our school years. While her children were in school, she actively served in PTA, becoming PTA President at Marshall Elementary, Peeples Jr. High, and Wingfield High Schools in JPS. She served on the State Board of PTA in different capacities, becoming Vice President. Catherine was one of six people (two women) selected to serve on the Biracial Committee for Jackson Public Schools in 1969. They redrew all district lines for JPS, which began integration in all JPS schools in February, 1970. She was very proud of this accomplishment. In 1986 she received her Realtors License and went to work at American Heritage Realty for the next 10 years. Catherine loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with all her heart and soul. He, and He alone, was all that came before her family in her life. Our mom was one of the greatest prayer warriors of all time. She led many people to come to know Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord. Our house was always open to anyone that needed a listening ear, guidance, or counseling, be it day or night. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton Gibson, Sr., her parents, and her brother, Joe Williams, Jr. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Lonna Gibson (Ricky) Anthony; grandson, Brett (Leah) Anthony; great-grandchild, Lake Anthony; grandson, Kirk (Callie) Anthony. Daughter, Tamara Gibson (John) Ford; granddaughters, Lindsay (Andrew) Busenlener and Elicia Ford; grandson, Barrett Ford. Son, Quinton, Jr. (Debi) Gibson; granddaughter, Paige (Jim) Petersen; great-grandson Luke Petersen; great-granddaughter, Maddie Petersen; grandson, Tyler Gibson. Foster Sons, David Finnell and Jayson Daniel. Sister, Bettye (Merrell) Bibby. We wish to thank the staff of Highland Home and PAX Hospice for all of the tender loving care they gave to our mom. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to MARL (MS Animal Rescue League) www.msarl.org; CARA (Community Animal Rescue and Adoptions MS) www.carams.org; or donate to curearthritis.org (rheumatoid arthritis).
