Danny "Pop Pig" Shumaker

Danny was born August 9, 1956 on his father’s birthday, the greatest gift. He is the son of Henry Tommy and Dorothy Garrett Shumaker. He was named after his mother’s favorite uncle, Dan Sojourner, and his grandfather, Tommie Shumaker and his father.

Danny spent his early years in Vicksburg and Crystal Springs, he eventually settled back in Crystal Springs to raise his family. This was his greatest accomplishment. His children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.

Danny was a proud part of UMMC Campus Police for many years. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering on anything with an engine, watching old westerns on tv, reading Louis L’Amour books, spending time with family, friends, and most of all his dogs.

Danny will be remembered for being the type of man who was tough, fair, and kind. He faced many obstacles in his time on Earth. However, he overcame them and didn’t lose his faith. Danny was truly the meaning of selfless. He gave all he had, even if it left him with nothing.

Boy! He was a talker, he loved to talk to anyone, about anything. He gave no regard to time when it came to gabbing! He could talk for hours about any given subject. If you ran into him in the grocery store you were there for a while! You learned something, you had a laugh, and you always walked away with a smile. There was usually a peep show involved of his gun shot scar also!

He loved to tell a joke. Mostly inappropriate ones, at inappropriate times. He knew those were the best ones! Especially if they were followed by an oink!

The legacy he’s left behind may not be of dollars and materialistic things. It is of love, laughter, friendship, kindness, work ethic, morals, respect, things that can not be lost or taken away. This was very evident the past week as many, many tears were shed and lots of visitors came to see him. Some he had not seen in years. Doctors even commented on being surprised anyone had so many visitors and loved ones.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother, Jimmy, sisters, Linda and Sandra Shumaker, and great grandson Johnny Daxton. The greatest reunion is going on in Heaven!

Danny is survived by his daughter, Christy Shoemaker (Tim Moore), sons Danny (Susanna) Shumaker, Jr, and Micheal (Emily) Shumaker, neice Heather (Eric) Burgess, Maleigh Williams. Grandchildren, Jonathan (Whisper) Shoemaker, Amber Shoemaker (John Deaton), Danny III, Chloe, Logan, Brayden, River, Laken, Willow, and Ridge Shumaker. Great granddaughters AnnaLeigh, Evie, and Lilah. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
