David Albert Corban of Jackson died January 6, 2009 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. David was born February 2, 1945 to the late David W. and Mazie Barwick Corban in Hattiesburg and grew up in Petal. He was descended from several generations of the Corban, Oglesby, Barwick and Dean families of Southern Mississippi. As a child, he was funny and charming. As an adult, he was a loving husband to his wife, Linell Shave Corban; a supportive father to his children, James and Jennifer; a reliable brother to his sister, Mary Lu Nelson; and a loyal friend to many.\ \ Growing up in Petal, David distinguished himself as a youthful musician, playing the baritone horn in the Petal High School band, winning many medals for solos and ensembles, as well as playing the cello for the Youth Orchestra of Hattiesburg. He played baritone for four years in the USM marching band. At USM, he majored in history and music; upon graduation, he attended the Mississippi School of Law. In addition to his interest in music, David read widely, always interested in politics and economics. He pursued a life-long interest in gardening and horticulture.\ \ After serving 28 years on the Capitol City Police Force, David retired recently with the rank of Sergeant. Before his retirement, he was named Officer of the Year. He was also a tree farmer in Franklin County.\ \ As a child, David became a member of the Petal-Harvey Baptist Church in Petal and attended church there until he entered college. As an adult, he attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Clinton. \ \ David is survived by his wife, Linell of Jackson; his daughter Jennifer of Hattiesburg; his son and daughter-in-law James and Erin Corban of Birmingham, AL; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lu and Ronald Nelson of Winter Park, FL; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shave of Mississippi; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and Bobby Runnels, of Mendenhall; niece and nephews Robin Bridges and Jonathan Marshall of Mississippi, and Geoffrey Nelson of St. Petersburg, FL; and numerous cousins throughout the south.\ \ Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1799 Clinton-Raymond Road, Clinton, MS 39056.
