A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00pm Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram, with visitation 5:00pm-6:00pm prior to the service. Donald Eugene Slabach was born on May 4, 1959 to Irvin and Elma Sarah Schwietert Slabach who proceeded him in everlasting life. He was born in Memorial Hospital of South Bend Indiana. He was one of eight children with his surviving siblings being Marjorie A.(Dianne Safholm) Slabach, Jeanette Campbell, Dorothy (Dan Wiebe) Slabach, Richard (Patti) Slabach, Bill (Brenda Betley) Slabach, Malinda Hinnenkamp, Fredrick G. (Melany Nielson) Slabach. He is also survived by his childhood friend and wife of fifteen years, Jan Marie Fortenberry Slabach and his only child, Sarah Catherine Slabach. He had two step-children, Amanda (Chris) Smith Linge and Bud (Stacey) Smith. Don is survived by his in-laws, Joe and Joyce Fortenberry and three brother-in-laws, Joey (Trudy) Fortenberry, Jim (Susie) Fortenberry and Jack (Lisa) Fortenberry. He had many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who were all very dear to him. He had three grandchildren of the heart, Olivia, Chloe and Emma Linge. Don has always had an interest in history, archeology, and studies in comparative religions and cults. He was a student of politics and was often found discussing election results, campaign issues, and the results of opinion polls without filtering them through the mass media. He was a published researcher, an experienced public speaker, and has served as a teacher in the high school and college classroom as well as conducted training for nonprofit, educational, and public executives. He taught The Seekers Sunday School Class at Lakeshore Congregational Methodist Church where he was an active member for 15 years. Don loved God, his family, his church and his job as a grant administrator with Hinds Community College. He took pride in the strong Christian leadership at the college. Don received his bachelors degree from Mississippi College and his masters from Mississippi State University. Don had a long and distinguished career in education serving as a research analyst at the Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University and as a grants administrator with Mississippi PBS, Jackson Public Schools, Parents for Public Schools and Hinds Community College. We ask that donations be made to Mississippi Methodist Cursillo, a movement Don loved dearly and served in often, or Lakeshore Congregational Methodist Church, in lieu of flowers.
