Doris was born June 22, 1935 in Winona, MS to James Wesley Ray and Lizzie Ray. She grew up in Starkville and graduated from Starkville High School in1954. She met the love of her life, Ottis Lee Clanton, in 1951 at Starkville High School. They were married October 1, 1955 in Starkville at Calvary Baptist Church. She traveled with Ottis port to port while he served in the Navy. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ottis Lee Clanton and her children Diana Speed (John), Dennis Clanton (Kathi), Dayna White (Lawrence) and Debra Upton (Craig), 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, and brother Randy Ray. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Wesley Ray and Lizzie Ray, sisters Dorothy Downs and Maxine Baswell, brothers Robert Charles Ray and James E. Ray. Doris enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours with her husband on their back deck and tending to their vegetable garden. She loved working in her flower beds and cooking for her family. She loved singing and listening to gospel music. Doris also enjoyed travelling. She and her husband visited every state west of the Mississippi more than once. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church of Jackson where she spent much time with her church family and Sunday school class. Her gentle and loving spirit defined her. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved God and cherished her family. We take great comfort in knowing she is with her Lord and Savior and we are forever grateful that she made a place for the Lord in our home. Pallbearers will be John Speed, Lawrence White, Craig Upton, Daniel Clanton, Ben White, Casey Upton, Codey Upton, Jim Balkanloo and Dustin Hedgpeth. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Albright, Ken Champion, Ricky Hall, Richard Jones, Stanley Sullivan and Eddie Wells. The family would like to thank all the staff at Clinton Healthcare for the care and love given to our mother during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, Doris would love for you to plant a rose in your yard in her memory. She’ll give you a big smile for that!
