George Dewey Burney, Jr., 87, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation will be Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 2 PM until 5PM at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. A graveside service will be 1PM Monday, February 10, 2014 at State Line Cemetery in Stateline, MS. Mr. Burney was born May 10, 1926 in State Line, MS. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bucyrus Victory in the South Pacific. After WWII he worked for Atlas Cement Co. in Gary, IN; at Ingalls shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS and Janche Dredging and Towing in New Orleans, LA. He retired after 33 years working for Mississippi Steel Service Corporation in Flowood, MS. Mr. Burney loved the outdoors and was an avid Hunter, fisherman and gardener. He was a devoted husband and father. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leodis Mills Burney, Sr. and his sister, Sarah Vines. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alva Jones Burney; sons, Dana Burney (Linda) of Jackson and Don Burney of Richland; sister, Patricia Cochrane of Theodore, AL; grandsons, Brian Burney (Amy) of Richland and William Burney (Holly) of Brandon; and great grandchildren, Gannon, Garrett, Ross and Macey Burney. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.
