George Dewey Newman, Jr., 98, of Covington, Tenn. passed away on Thursday, March 28 of 2024 in Florence, Miss. surrounded by those he loved. Uncle George, as many people knew him, was born in Utica, Miss. on May 21, 1925.

Early in life, he graduated from Raymond High School. Shortly after graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy, where he spent 3 years traveling the Atlantic Ocean as a Pharmacists' Mate Second Class on the U.S.S Alexander J. Luke. After an honorable discharge in May of 1946, he returned home to continue his education at Hinds Junior College, Mississippi College and Mississippi State University where he obtained both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Chemistry.

While attending Mississippi College, he met the love of his life, Jean Webster. An instant spark between the two led them to continuing their education together through Mississippi College and Mississippi State University. While at Mississippi State University they married on June 6, 1948, and began building their lives together. George and Jean first moved to Ethel, Miss. in 1951where they both started their first jobs at Ethel High School. He taught math and she taught home economics. After 2 years there, they decided to expand their careers and traveled abroad. They spent many happy years working and traveling together before her passing.

The beginning of his business career started in Japan where he became a manager for Gulf
Oil. After 1 year, he and Jean relocated to Frankfort, Ky. where he became Plant Manager for
Pfizer, remaining there for 19 years before transferring to Covington, Tn. Here he worked for Bruce Paneling and Plywood for a number of years and Shulton and Company for 17 additional years. After retiring in 1992, he took the rest of his spare time to enjoy his many hobbies. Golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling, and visiting family were a few of his favorite things to do. He could sit and tell endless stories of his many hunting and fishing trips to Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida and Canada with his friends and family. With a brilliant mind, he could recall every specific detail of the hunt. Not one to tell tall tales, George lived his life as a true southern gentleman.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Webster Newman; parents, George Dewey Newman, Sr. and Ruby Pearl Hennington Newman; his brothers, Robert Thomas Newman and Charles E. Newman, Sr.; and sister Mildred Newman Moseley.

He is survived by his brother, Sam (Debbie) Newman of Florence; sister-in-law, Catherine Hubbard Newman of Ethel, Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 6th at 11am in the Utica City Cemetery in Utica.

Services will be graveside and include full military honors with nephew, Rev. Ed Newman, officiating and reading of the eulogy by his best friend of 50 years, John Frazier.
