Gerald Dean Dungan, 85, of Harrisville passed away peacefully on August 20, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church located at 1198 Old Pearl Road in Florence, MS 39073. The celebration of life will begin at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by a graveside service to lay him to rest.
Mr. Dungan was born on January 7, 1938. He was a graduate of Crystal Springs High School, where he was a notable football star and also met the love of his life, Carolyn Elaine Tompkins, who was his wife of 61 years. Mr. Dungan went on to play football for the University of New Mexico before joining the United States Air Force and moving his family to Denver, Colorado. After serving a few years in Colorado, he moved his family back to Mississippi where he proudly served his country in the Air National Guard. After 33 years of combined service, he retired as Senior Master Sergeant. After retirement, he worked ten years with the Mississippi Braves beginning their first year of existence in Pearl. He was also very active in his community as the poll manager during elections and forming the first neighborhood watch for the Old Pearl community.
Mr. Dungan loved the Lord, his family, and his church. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church for over 50 years. He also loved the Atlanta Braves, hunting, watching westerns, collecting and shooting guns, and his dogs. Mr. Dungan lived a simple, humble life, and was just an all-around genuine, down-to-earth, sweet and generous man.
He is survived by his daughters, Angela Dungan Crain (Gary) of Canton, MS and Kecia Dungan Kinabrew of Harrisville, MS; grandchildren Phillip Alton Crain (Amberly) of Madison, MS, Daniel Owen Dungan (Savanah) of Jacksonville, FL, Shannon Crain Coleman of Canton, MS and seven great grandchildren; Brayden, Jase and Myles Crain (Phillip), Bentley and Bowen Coleman (Shannon), Abby and Dillon Dungan (Daniel), his sister-in-law, Carolyn Tompkins of Crystal Springs and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents JM and Mary Dungan; stepdad, Earl Corbin; his wife, Carolyn; his sons, David Owen Dungan, and Eric Dean Dungan; his brothers Jim Dungan and Don Earl Corbin both of Albuquerque, NM; and son-in-law, David Kinabrew.
