Herbert Ulley Hancock passed away at the age of 80, at Hospice Ministries on Monday, February 22, 2010 after a courageous bout with cancer. Visitation will be 5-8pm Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Services will be 10am Thursday, February 25, 2010 in the funeral home chapel followed by interment at Hazlehurst City Cemetery.\ \ Herbert was born on August 22, 1929, to Ernest Lee and Maudie Lou Hancock at Gallman, MS. He was predeceased in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Hancock. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Ann Stewart Hancock, daughter, Sharon Tackett, sons, Jeff Tackett and William Tackett, brother, Thomas Hancock, Granddaughters, Ami Pike, Monica Bond, and Tabatha Bond, Grandsons, Sedgie Bond and Patrick Tackett, two great grandchildren, Faith Pike and Zachary Pike, brother-in-law, Herbert E. Stewart, Jr., and a host of friends.\ \ As a young teenager, he became a truck driver and transported vegetables and other products over several southern states. He served in the army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Military Service, he started a long career at Jackson in the automobile business. He served as a car salesman, service manager, body shop manager, and was also a managing partner in an automobile dealership at Union, MS. He was also a licensed pilot and while he was employed at East Ford as Service Manager, he was the company pilot. After Herb retired from the automobile business, he became an automobile adjuster and appraiser. In recent years, he served as a guide at Ergon's Kerney Park Shooting Preserve in Flora where he also managed and trained the bird dogs at the bird dog kennel.\ \ Herbert was well known as a breeder and trainer of bird dogs and was active in field trials where he often served as a judge. For the last thirty years, he has been very active in raising, training, and showing Tennessee Walking horses. He showed his horses frequently with much success in several southern states. He enjoyed teaching young people how to ride and show Tennessee Walking horses.\ \ Herbert was a member and director of the Heart O'Dixie Walking and Racking Horse Association, a member of the Mississippi Walking Horse Association, a member and director of the Mississippi State Charity Horse Show Association, a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder's and Exhibitor's Association, and a member of the American Field Trial Association.\ \ Herbert was truly a Southern Christian Gentleman who always was available to help anyone who had a need and he will be missed very much by his loved ones and many friends.\ \ Pallbearers are Hiram Young, John Cadwallader, Joe Seabo, Chuck Boyer, Tank, Cage, and Jerry Wade. Honorary Pallbearers are: Charles Bailey, Chad White, Lowell Stephens, Jeff Tackett, Herbert E. Stewart, Jr., Norris Rice, and D.W.
