Mr. James "Jim" Ralph Mitchell

James Ralph Mitchell passed away at his home February 1, 2017 with his beloved fur baby in his lap. Jim was born on 12/16/43 in Jackson, Ms the eldest son of Ralph Bridger Mitchell and Elizabeth Nell Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Sallie and his siblings Phillip Mitchell, Barbara Mitchell Speir (Wayne) and Rick Mitchell (Lynda). Jim was insistent that there be no funeral held for him. He always said he wanted to be buried in a 'pine box'. As time progressed he decided he would rather be cremated and have his ashes scattered. Which will be done at a later time. Jim joined the Army directly after High School and became a medic. He fought in Vietnam and was proud to be a veteran. Even though he would have made a wonderful nurse in the civilian world, he deemed it 'too much red tape' and went into the convenience store business. He owned and operated several Shell stations in the Jackson area along with a cigarette store on McDowell Rd. On November 20, 2004, Jim married Sallie Burgess. They resided in Raymond, Ms along with their 7 beloved fur babies. He was most content when he had a dog in his lap. Jim had many hobbies but always said he was a student of many things and a master of none. His latest hobby, wood carving became a great joy for him. He also dabbled in painting, cooking, metal detecting and motorcycle riding. He traveled extensively in the last couple of years, taking numerous road trips to AZ and CA to visit with Sheryl and Kelly. He had a trip planned this spring to go back out west to visit. He and his wife, Sallie were members of First Baptist Church of Byram. Jim loved the Lord and enjoyed having 'debates' with his son-in-law, Steve Smith. We are sure he is in a great debate with Jesus and enjoying every minute of it. Jim is survived by his wife, Sallie and his children, Donna Dell Mitchell Smith (Steve), Sheryl Elizabeth Mitchell, James Ralph Kelly Mitchell (Amy). He was also privileged to become a stepdad to Ramsey Russell (Anita) and Tommy Russell when he and Sallie married. His grandchildren are Christian Tyler Smith (Heather), Tanner Steven Smith, Joshua Conner Mitchell, Ethan McCutcheon, Holt Russell, Madison Russell, Simmons Russell, Forest Russell, Duncan Russell and Parker Russell. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him but he did it HIS WAY!
