James Vernell Mitchell passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at Briar Hill Rest Home in Florence. He was 84 years old. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, August 1st from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence, MS. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories. Vernell was born April 24, 1937 in Derma, MS to the late Emery Alvie and Mable Davis Mitchell. He was a member of Westview Baptist Church in South Jackson and attended Brandon Baptist Church. He retired from MS State Hwy Department and was a member of Woodman of the World. He enjoyed his horses, driving his John Deere tractor, and raising chickens. He loved traveling with his children and grandchildren. Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Janie Barker Mitchell. He is survived by his children, Vickie Lynn Risher (Bobby) of Terry; son, James “Jay” Mitchell (Barbara) of Florence; grandchildren, Rob Risher (Cindy), Rick Risher (Casey) and Jamie Craft; great grandchildren, Annie Risher and Thea Risher; sisters, Emma Nell Jordan of Vardaman, MS, Joyce Sue Odom of Big Creek, MS, and Sandra Tedder of Vardaman, MS; brother, Jerry Mitchell of Bruce, MS; and numerous nieces and nephew.
