Born November 20, 1950, James Powell Schilling passed away August 5, 2014, after a brief stay at the VA Hospice in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be 1:00pm until the 2:00pm funeral service, Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. As a childhood member of the former McDowell Road Baptist Church, James played with his older brothers and neighborhood children at their family home on Lea Circle. He attended Forest Hill schools and graduated from Wingfield High School in 1968. James took classes at Hinds Jr College until joining the U.S. Army in January 1970 where he served in Vietnam. Private First Class James P. Schilling was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon return to civilian life James worked at a variety of jobs: house painter, surveyor, offshore oil driller... until joining the United States Postal Service as postal clerk and mail handler, a career from which he eventually retired. James enjoyed the outdoors, creating his own little haven at his small house in the woods, and shared with pets (Midway, Missy and others). A gentle man with a warm smile, James often rode his Harley with friends or his brother Ed. Having no children of his own, James loved his nieces and nephew: Sandra Schilling Parks (Bill and their children, Travis and Haley); Jeff Schilling; Amanda Schilling Brice (Jake); and Lenora Schilling Hamilton (Robbie). James is survived by his mother, Frances Powell Schilling, and two older brothers: Lee H. Schilling (Carol) and Edward E. Schilling (Anita). He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy H. Schilling. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or the charity of your choice.
