Janie Marie Barker Mitchell, 79, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 26th from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 funeral service at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories. Mrs. Mitchell was born January 17, 1938 at home in Vardaman, MS and moved to Jackson in January 1946 where she graduated Forest Hill High School in 1956. She worked at MS Valley Gas Company where she retired after 44 years. She was a lifetime member of Westview Baptist Church where she would volunteer at the Food Pantry on Thursday. She raised her children to understand and live by her favorite saying which was “two wrongs don’t make a right”. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and traveling with her kids and grandkids, stopping at all the Walmart’s in every state because she said, “Every Walmart had different things to see”. She participated in several 5K Walks for charity. She enjoyed spending time at home reading and watching movies. Mrs. Mitchell is preceded in death by her father, Allen Barker; mother, Carris Barker; brother, David Barker; numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, James Vernell Mitchell; daughter, Vickie Lynn (Bobby) Risher; son, James “Jay” (Barbara) Mitchell; 3 grandsons, Rob Risher, Rick Risher and Jamie Craft; granddaughter, Cindy Risher; great granddaughter, Annie Risher; brother, James Lee Barker; and sister, Sarah Blalock.
