Joe Alton Mullins went home to be with the Lord on May 27, 2024 while at Baptist Hospital recovering from heart bypass surgery. He was 79 years old.
Joe was a beloved father of 4 children and a grandfather to 7 grandchildren. He was married to Ann Mullins for nearly 53 years.
He was a graduate of Wesson High School. He turned down a football scholarship to Co-Lin Jr. College to pursue a career with the Illinois Central Railroad, which later became Canadian National Railroad. He retired from there after 41 years of service as a Conductor. Joe also served as a medic in the National Guard for 6 years.
Currently Joe was attending Raymond Road Baptist Church. He served as deacon at two prior churches and was a part of the hospital ministry team at Morrison Heights Baptist Church. He made many hospital visits to encourage and lift up others that were sick. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation to make anyone laugh.
He was blessed to have 20 years of retirement. During that time, he enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking, corvette restoration, and antique collecting. He was also able to spend many special moments with his children and grandchildren. He always made it a point to attend special events including sports, school ceremonies, graduations, and many other important family moments. He was incredibly proud of each one of his grandchildren and greatly missed his late grandson, Joshua Dillard.
Joe Mullins was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Russell and Eunice Mullins, brothers, Jimmy and Billy Mullins, and grandson, Joshua Dillard.
Joe is survived by his wife, Ann Mullins, daughters Delia Smith (Mark), Theresa Russell (John), and Rachel Bautista (Ron), son Randy Mullins (Jessica), grandchildren Jacob Dillard, Annemarie Russell Jones, Ava Hilton, Peyton Mullins, Caleb Mullins, and Audrey Mullins. Joe is also survived by his brothers Jackie Mullins (Diane), Barry Mullins, and WL Mullins.
