Louis “Corky” Smith, passed into the arms of our Lord and Savior Tuesday evening, September 12, 2023. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, son, brother and uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews, his own, as well as the ones he accepted with open arms when he and his wife, Virginia Mary Barnes married 45 years ago.
After high school, Corky earned an associate Arts Degree from Co-Lin. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science and Criminal Justice Degree from USM in May of 1976. While he was obtaining his degree at USM, he also graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy. He was a very determined young man who knew his purpose from an early age. He worked at the Jackson Police Department from December 1, 1957, until June 30, 1988. He worked his way up the ranks from Patrolman, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Asst. Chief and then to Chief in his 30 years at JPD, retiring in 1988. He was also in the MS Army National Guard for 32 years and retired on May 1, 1994. After retirement he still had so much to offer the law enforcement and justice community and he went to work for Deviney and Wackenhut for several years.
Corky loved God, his family, and his churches. He started out as a member of Calvary Baptist Church then was a member of Alta Woods Baptist and after moving his family, he rejoined Calvary Baptist Church and then finally at First Baptist Church of Raymond.
Corky made many, many friends throughout his life during his career as a police officer, national guardsman, and active member in his churches.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Toxie and Lillie Belle Smith; a sister, Werlein Barnes; and a grandson, Jacob Holiday.
Those left behind to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are, his loving wife of 45 years, Virginia; four daughters, Karen Smith Law, Janet Smith Holiday(Sonny), Judy Smith Reed (Paul), and Jennifer Smith; a stepson, Ricky Clifton (Ann); sister, Katherine Smith Holiday; 7 grandchildren, Emily Welch (Corey), Hunter Holiday (Emily), Meagan Babb (Adrian), Brianna Moscoso (Arjuna), Haden Reed, Andrew Clifton, and Maggie Clifton; and lastly, 9 great grandchildren, Brock and Kali Sumrall, Ava James and Hayes Holiday, Summer Tillery, Silas and Addy Babb, Augi Watson, and Elaina Moscoso.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the visitation on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 9:00 am until the hour of service at 11:00 am at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Interment with Policeman Honors will follow the service at D’Lo Cemetery in D’Lo.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Raymond.
