Marshall James Stout, Sr. was born on March 15, 1924 in Marion County, Mississippi, near Bassfield, Mississippi. He grew up from early childhood on family land near Florence. He passed away on October 14, 2015 at Briar Hill Rest Home in Florence, Mississippi at the age of 91. He was a long time resident of Florence, MS and was known by all as "James". Visitation will be Monday, October 19, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. at Chancellor's Funeral Home in Florence with funeral services following immediately at 10:00 A.M. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, with Chancellor's Funeral Home of Florence in charge of arrangements. James was one of four children born to his parents, Albert Marble Stout (2/12/1886 - 2/28/1979) and Willie Mae Hemphill (5/13/1903 - 1/15/1984). He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eleanor Cathleen Stout Hemphill: (10/20/1930 - 8/16/1960) and Myrita Stout Shirley (10/7/1926 - 5/1973). He is survived by one of his sisters, Alice B. Stout Hardwick (Born 4/28/1922), who is also a long time resident of the Florence area. James was also preceded in death by his "love at first sight", Thelma Catherine Thompson Stout (1/16/1929 - 5/21/1983) after a 34 year marriage. Catherine was from Brandon, Mississippi. James never remarried. They are both survived by their only child, Marshall James Stout, Jr., MD and his five children: Marshall James (Jamie) Stout, IV, CRNA (b. 1978); Christopher R. Stout (b.1980) and wife Katie; Sara Katherine Stout (b. 1984 and soon to wed Mr. Clint Wightman); Jacob Morgan Stout ( b. 1991 and currently a sophomore medical student at UMMC); and Anna Grace Stout (b. 1994 and currently a senior at the University of MS in Oxford and accepted to start medical school Fall 2016). Jamie Stout is married to Laura Mabry Stout and they have given James the blessing of three wonderful great grandchildren (Caitlin, Reese and James). They live in Knoxville, TN. Sara Stout has two wonderful children, David Powers (10 years old) and Kylie Eldridge (4 years old), living in Florence. That totals five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, so far! James served in the U. S. Army 4/25/1944 - 4/27/1946, 88th Infantry Division, during WWII in the Italian Campaign. He was a "light machine gunner" in the Northern Apennine Mountains and Po Valley for which he received several decorations and citations, including the Combat Infantry Badge. He was also honorably discharged from the Enlisted Reserve Corps 4/26/1949. James was employed as an accountant by Swift & Company for 35 years until his retirement. Swift & Company transferred him to Meridian, MS from 1960 - 1970. His passion was living on the family land in Florence, Mississippi. In 2002 he built the home he and Catherine had dreamed of. He immensely enjoyed gardening and the solitude of his inherited acreage in the country. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his utmost priority. He was always available and attended many, many events with them and had them visit and stay with him as often as possible. When his son, Jim, took an emergency medicine job in Kingsport, TN from 1992 until 1998, he maintained an apartment in Tennessee, as well as a home in Mississippi, to be with family for all those years. That is how dedicated he was to his family. He was extremely proud of his son, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He closely followed their careers and educations. He was proud of Jacob, grandson, being a second year medical student recently, but sadly, he missed learning of Anna Grace Stout's acceptance to medical school by one day. Above all, He was the go to person for his family, always having the right answers. He never turned down a request when help was needed. He will be sorely missed.
