Mary Janette Harris

Mary Janette Harris, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on September 4, 2023 in Clinton, Mississippi. Born on March 19, 1931 to Wyatt Gordon "Jim" Thomas and Mattie Huff Thomas in Holly Bluff, Mississippi.  Mrs. Mary's life was marked by selflessness and a deep love for her family and community.

Mrs. Mary's early years were shaped by her passion for basketball that began long before she played for the South Delta All Star Basketball Team. Her dedication to the sport was evident as she poured her heart into every game. Even in her later years, she remained an ardent fan of basketball and followed her favorite teams' games with unwavering enthusiasm. 

Following her dreams beyond the basketball court, Mrs. Mary embarked on a career that spanned an impressive 37 years with the Mississippi State Tax Commission. She worked diligently until retirement as a testament to her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.

One of the most treasured aspects of Mrs. Mary's life was her unwavering faith and dedication to Brookleigh Baptist Church. Alongside her husband Harold, Mary found solace and joy in singing together with their fellow church members. 

Mrs. Mary cherished spending time with those she held dear and she leaves behind to cherish her memory; a loving daughter, Cindy Burnham of Clinton; grandson, Jeremy Burnham (Mary) of Brandon; two sisters, Frankie Boyd (Don) of Utica and Judy Strong (Charles) of Long Beach.

Mary is now reunited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt Gordon Thomas, and her beloved husband Harold Harris in eternal peace. Her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to family will continue to be felt by all whose lives she touched.

Friends and family are invited to attend her memorial service and visitation on Thursday, September 7th, with visitation starting at 1:00pm and continuing until the hour of service at 2:00pm, at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram.  Interment will follow the service at Lakewood South Memorial Park in Jackson.
