The memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. There will be no Graveside services.
Merle was born on April 10, 1952, to Merle and Carolyn Nelson in Jackson, MS. He has lived in Florence since he was 5 years old where he was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence. Merle was a hard worker. He retired from Windstream where he served 30 plus years only to continue to work for his lawn service, Nelson Lawn Care, that he operated with his family. He and his father took great pride in their work and Merle instilled great work ethics in his sons and grandsons. Merle loved the outdoors and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved taking many hunting trips with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed “Cruising the Coast” and classic cars where he met many new friends and rekindled friendships. He was a member of Big River Car Club and attended Cruise-Ins and numerous car shows, where he loved to show off his 1972 Chevelle. Merle was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. Most importantly, Merle was an excellent example of a Christian in his everyday walk with the Lord and had the most kindhearted loving spirit that you could ask for. Merle married his sweetheart, Kathy, on February 14, 1975, and continuously showed his faithful, undying, devoted true love to her for a wonderful 48 years. He will truly be missed by all.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Carolyn Nelson, and brothers, Kenny Nelson, and Lane Nelson. He is survived by his wife of 48 wonderful years, Kathy Nelson; sons, Justin Nelson (Stefanie) of Florence and Will Nelson (April) of Florence; brother, Richard Wayne Nelson of Texas; grandchildren, Breland Nelson, Brady Nelson, Hope Temple (TJ), and Kaylee Nelson; and one great grandchild, Trace Temple; and several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
