Raymond Sims

Raymond “Ray” “Big Daddy” Eugene Sims passed into the arms of Jesus in Jackson on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.  Raymond was 85 years old. The family will receive family and friends for visitation on Saturday, December 17, 2022, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence, MS.  The burial service will follow at Harlands Creek Baptist Church in Coxburg, MS at 3:00 PM.

Mr. Sims was born on December 9, 1937, to the late Edward Eugene Sims and Gladys Vera Abel in Belzoni, Mississippi. He grew up in Coxburg, Mississippi in the Harlands Creek community.  After graduating from Coxburg High School, Raymond continued his education at Holmes Community College where he played basketball and finished his undergraduate education at Mississippi College with a degree in coaching and education.  In 1960, Raymond was drafted into the Army and trained at Fort Jackson, in Columbia, SC, and continued his service for eight years in the military reserves.  After his college education and military service, Ray began his professional career coaching football, basketball and track and teaching history and science in several schools in the Mississippi Delta.   After several years in education, Ray began his career in insurance with Georgia Life Insurance Company and shortly after became a claims adjuster/litigator with State Farm Insurance and made Clinton, MS, home for his wife and three daughters for 32 years.  During this time, Mr. Sims received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Mississippi College School of Law.  While living in Clinton, MS, Ray was devoted to his family, Morrison Heights Baptist Church, where he served as deacon of the church, coached youth league sports and was president of the Kiwanis Club of Clinton, MS.  He retired from State Farm Insurance after 35 years of service and then moved to Richland, MS.  He continued his devotion to his faith by joining the deacons of First Baptist Church of Richland, MS, and continued to be involved with the youth in the community. 

Along with his parents, Mr. Sims is preceded in death by his sister; Vera Ann Boatwright (Andy).   He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Ramona Torrance Sims. Daughters; Monica Sims Motley (Rob) of Brandon, MS, Susan Michelle Sims Jett of Richland, MS, Melissa Sims Nichols of Birmingham, AL. God daughter; Patricia Ann Cox of Jackson, MS; grandchildren; Beth Motley Powell (Colt), Katie Lynn Motley, and Carson Nichols; great grandchildren; Cayson, Brynlee Powell, and Reese Powell.
