Mr. Robert L. Long Sr.

August 8, 1930 — December 9, 2018

Robert L. Long passed away on December 9, 2018. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 5-7pm at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Services will be Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 11am in the funeral home chapel with visitation 10-11am Wednesday. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Blvd. He was born in Vardaman, MS, but was raised in Ruleville, MS where he graduated from Ruleville High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Jones. Robert served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the Navy, he, his wife and three children returned to Ruleville to make their home. He was employed with United Gas Corp. (now Centerpoint Energy) for 38 years. During these years he was transferred from Ruleville to Oxford, MS and then to Jackson, MS where he worked until his retirement. Robert was a 32nd degree Mason and an active member of Leavell Woods United Methodist Church since 1957. One of his greatest pleasures and long time enjoyment was being part of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 22, sponsored by Leavell Woods Methodist Church for 23 years. During his service with the Boy Scouts, he received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award and was chosen to be a World Jamboree Scout Master that was held in Sweden. He was also selected to be a National Jamboree Scout Master twice-one in Idaho and one in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. While he was Scout Master, he assisted over 50 young men to receive the rank of Eagle Scout. He was extremely proud that both of his sons and one of his grandsons, Sean George, also earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After his retirement from scouting, many of his scouts would come by for him to meet their wife and children. That meant so much to Robert and until this day some of the scouts would come by to visit and they would talk about the years that they all enjoyed during the years they shared in scouting. Robert received the “Golden Deeds” award that was given by the Exchange Club for the service he had given to the youth of the community. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Brenda Long George. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jones Long of Jackson, MS; two sons, Robert L. (Bo) Long, Jr. and wife, Linda of Byram, MS and Dr. Gary A. Long and wife, Kathy, of Clinton, MS and son-in-law Glen George of Jackson, MS; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association. Online guest book available at www.chancellorfuneralhome.com.
