Ruth Hooks Palmer died peacefully at Sacred Heart Hospital Destin, Florida, September 28, 2014 at the age of 86. She is survived by her son, Joe Hooks and wife Jass, grandson Siam Hooks, daughter, Nancy Hooks Smith and husband Greg and granddaughter Ashley Jo Nielson and husband Mike. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph C Hooks, Sr. Born in Hazlehurst and a long time resident of Jackson, Ruth retired from the City of Jackson in 1987 after 32 years of service. She was a longtime volunteer at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and enjoyed played bridge at Sikes Park club house for many years. Some of her passions included home gardening, sewing, quilting and needle point. She was an active traveler and visited many parts of USA as well as various foreign countries including Thailand, India, Philippines, Nepal, and France. Her fond travel memories included Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, and a hot air balloon ride in Colorado. She moved to Destin, Florida in 2010 to be closer to her daughter and had lived at Sterling House Assisted Living Facility for the past 3 months. Ruth was a committed Christian and longtime member of Southside Baptist Church in Jackson. She attended Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Destin for the past 4 years. Memorials can be made in care of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1862, Destin, Florida 32540. Services will be held on Saturday October 4 at Gum Springs Baptist Church in Braxton, MS at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be at the church from 2:00 – 3:00 prior to the service. Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram, Ms is in charge of arrangements. The Gum Springs church will provide food for a celebration of life immediately following the graveside ceremony.
