Samuel “Sam” Mark Kursar of Richland passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Merit Health River Oaks Hospital in Flowood. He was 69 years old. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, September 6th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence and the family ask that friends “come as they are, in jeans and t-shirts”. The family will have a private Funeral and Graveside Service.
Sam was born June 12, 1953, in Manhattan, NY to the late Roko and Anna Kursar. He was raised in New York and moved to the Jackson area in 1992, spending his retirement years in Richland. He attended St Theresa Catholic Church and finished his spiritual journey at St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Sam always knew someone everywhere he went, friends and strangers alike, were always met with a big smile and a wave. He touched many lives through his teaching in the Jackson metropolitan area, beginning at Provine High School and ending his career at Jim Hill High School, where he coached baseball. Sam proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1983 until 1995.
Along with his parents, Sam is also preceded in death by his brother, Nicholas Kursar. He is survived by his wife, Valerie Kursar of Richland; daughter, Elizabeth Smith of Richland; son, Chris Kursar of Tampa, FL; and grandchildren, Viktoria Brown and Hayleigh Smith.
In Lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
