Velma Ruth Blount, 84, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Manhattan Nursing Home in Jackson. Visitation will be 11am until the 1:00pm funeral service Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram. Committal in the chapel following the service. Mrs. Blount was born in Covington County, MS to the late George Lawrence Shoemake and Genie Velma Thaxton Shoemake. She lived in the Jackson area for the last 25 years having come from Vicksburg. Mrs. Blount liked to sew, paint and she loved to shop. She worked her whole life until going into nursing care and was a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson. She is preceded in death by her brother, Edward Shoemake and her granddaughter, Micah LeBlanc. Survivors include her sons, Don Waylon Blount of Monterey, LA and Terry Gene Blount of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Carolyn S. Porter of Byram, Georgia Bramlett of Yazoo City, Jeanette Stringer of Byram, Lois Davis of Morton and Genelle Russell of Bovina; sister-in-law, Hilda Shoemake of Byram; four grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
